Dr Ruth Epstein is a Consultant voice specialist with a particular interest in professional voice users and neurolaryngology.
She works both clinically and in research / teaching. Whilst based in London she also works internationally, collaborating on clinical cases, research and undertaking speaking engagements. She is regularly asked to contribute to TV, radio and press.
Dr Epstein is currently the Head of the Speech & Language Therapy services at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital. In 1998 she received her doctorate in the faculty of Surgery at UCL; focusing on several areas including, in particular, the impact of Botulinum Toxin (Botox) injections in the treatment of laryngeal dystonia.
She holds various Honorary fellowships and Senior Lecturer positions at UCL and other academic institutions in the UK, as well as creating and running a successful MSc course in Voice Pathology since 2003.
Dr Epstein’s international collaborations have resulted in her being appointed Adjunct Associate Professor on the MGH Institute of Health Professions Graduate Program in Boston. She also collaborates with clinicians at the Centre for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA; the leading centre for innovation in ENT and laryngeal laser surgery.
Dr Epstein is and has been on various professional bodies both in the UK and abroad. She is a PhD examiner, a referee for the Medical Research Council, an elected Board member of the World Voice Consortium and a past President of The British Voice Association (2004-2005). She is also a founder member and lecturer for The British Performing Arts Medicine Trust, and ‘in-house’ clinician to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Guildhall School of Speech & Drama. More exotically she also has worked with the International Beat-Boxing Association.
Dr Epstein has remained at the cutting edge of research and innovation in the effective diagnosis and treatment of voice for many years. She has earned a reputation of proven expertise, no-nonsense professionalism and quick effective results.
